How far is Seneca Rocks from Madison or Chicago?
From Madison, the drive is about 13 hours. From Chicago, it’s about 10 hours. As Midwest climbers, we’re proud to be within driving distance of incredible climbing to the east and west of us, and we believe Appalachia is a truly underrated climbing area. Fall is the perfect time to get your climbing roadtrip in!
What are the camping accommodations?
The go-to campground at Seneca Rocks is Princess Snowbird Campground. It’s located (literally) right across the street from not only the climbing, but also the pizza shop, general store, and climbing gear shop. Everything exists in one road intersection, and you never have to move your car the whole trip! As of 2026, tent sites are $12 per person per night, and the campground includes wifi, heated bathrooms and showers, a pavillion, picnic tables, and fire rings.
What lodging accommodations are available?
If camping isn’t your vibe, there are multiple options for lodging. Yokum’s (the family that has owned the general store since the early 1900s) has motel rooms on their open second story above the general store, right across the street from the rock climbing. The second story features a wrap-around balcony with swings and seating for all guests to use, and take in the breath-taking view of the rocks you’ll be climbing the next day! All rooms are spacious, and include: 1-2 beds, a small refrigerator, microwave, sink area, coffee maker, showers, wifi, and tv. Motel rates range depending on the busy season, but their rates as of 2026 are: Room with 1 bed – $70-$115 per night; Rooms with 2 beds – $75-$125 per night. Apex Guides have stayed in these rooms for as long as 10 days before and can speak to their comfort and cleanliness!
As our local friends say, “Multi pitch trad climbing burns lots of calories, and leaves climbers in need of a large meal, and usually a frosty adult beverage! Many climbers enjoy the post-climb meal almost as much as any other part of climbing life!” There are a number of good restaurants at Seneca Rocks to gorge oneself and even-out the calorie deficit. Harper’s Front Porch Restaurant might have the best pizza crust Apex Guides have ever eaten! The Harpers’ pizza is a staple of a Seneca trad climber’s diet, and Joe and Caroline pride themselves in the Za their restaurant serves. The restaurant has an outdoor seating area with “front row views” of the rock. You can even see other parties summiting well into the evening!
Do I need prior outdoor climbing experience?
Not necessarily!
You can show up with us and we’ll help you through every step of the way. We will likely include a day at Devil’s Lake to train some of the skills you’ll need to execute while climbing in multi-pitch terrain.
What should I bring?
We’ll provide a full gear list for your trip, but the basics are: Harness, Helmet, Shoes, Assisted Brake Belay Device, Tube Style Belay Device, One Free Locking Carabiner, a 120cm Sling, and WATER. A small backpack that you feel comfortable climbing with can be super helpful as well.
Apex can provide any piece of gear you’ll need for your climbing trip if needed!
Other packing essentials include:
- Layers for wind, layers for rain
- Snacks & water for the route – you’ll get hungrier than you think!
